Daedalus designed the labyrinth of Crete to imprison the Minotaur, which had terrorized the locals for months with its constant queries as to whether they were working hard or hardly working. Find your way through equally entangled aisles of ears with today's Groupon: for $10, you get two tickets (up to a $20 value) to the pirate maze and more at Country Way Corn Maze in Fairport. The corn maze is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 a.m. until dark through November 7.
Stretching across five acres of farmland, this year’s Country Way Corn Maze layout is skulled and crossboned with a pirate theme and treats labyrinth lovers to fascinating trivia about notable piracy practitioners. Adding puzzles within puzzles to the curving corridors of cob are the rubbing stations that families must use to decode the maze’s secret word. Since the maze’s route can be as convoluted and nonsensical as the plots of the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, numerous Maize-o-Vision stations give the hopelessly shipwrecked a crow's nest from which they can seek a path back to dry land. A separate mini-maze leads the youngest visitors to stations that teach about farm animals instead.
Once you’ve finally uncovered an avenue of escape and shaved off your maze beard, you’ll enjoy unlimited access to 10 other attractions on the Country Way grounds. The cow train loads family members into individual bovine-shaped boxcars and takes them on a brisk tour of landscaped displays. More competitive clans can race rubber ducks using water pumps or race each other on the tricycle tracks (there’s one for both kids and adults). Country Way also boasts a corn cannon, which—similar to anything that involves the word cannon—provides endless hours of entertainment. As the sun sets, take a hayride around the garden center and snap photos of local wildlife (deer, wild turkey, feral garden gnomes) before picking out a ghoulish gourd from the pumpkin patch.
Outside food and drink are prohibited, but a snack bar provides necessary nourishment.
