Live Demonstrations / Personalized Instruction
Whenever an Artist speaks about a "linage" of instruction, it is a proud declaration of where their knowledge came from. Ours is a fusion of Northern European, Classical Italian and California Impressionism. With this background we can hone in on an individual's choice of style once foundations in painting are achieved.
The first “initiation” exercise that students in this class must accomplish is our Compass Rose exercise. This exercise teaches the student first, basic skills for blending, glazing etc. the Zorn palette of colors and then introduces the student to a new way of “seeing.”
The second exercise is a tradition that has been practiced for centuries.. copying old master paintings. It’s as if Di Vinci himself were sitting on your shoulder and speaking to you, revealing his secrets from centuries past...and is now your teacher ...and all you have to do is listen.
Copying got a bad wrap in the last century because it became synonymous with “cheating.” I assure you that it is not! Try to copy the Mona Lisa or any Carravagio. It is one of the most incredible learning experiences. To this day when in a european museum you will see a student with easel “copying” an old master.
PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN MATERIALS!
Compass Rose Project
You can purchase a kit at Artist & Craftsman Art Supply Store (1660 S La Cienega Blvd, LA, CA90035). You still need to bring a roll of paper towel and cotton rags on your own but the kit includes everything else for this project.
During the first class for the project you will not need many of any brushes.
#4 through #20 – Brights – medium soft Isabey “memory” or“Raphael Kevrin” or soft bristles but brights not flats or filberts (You don’t need every number, just a selection)1 ½” to 2” inexpensive large paint brush
One 20x20” canvas (The more expensive canvases, like 1.5” box frame, have a nicer surface to paint on)
Paints - I will recommend brands that have the nicest color. Please though, DO NOT BUY CHEAP PAINTS OR STUDENT GRADE. I also do not recommend Windsor & Newton because the color of their paints varies greatly from other brands. For instance, Naples yellow is a huge difference.
First few weeks you will need:
Raw umber – Brownish oil paint by Norma or Old Holland brands has a beautiful golden shade. Other brands of raw umber tend to be much cooler.
Titanium white – If you are on a budget buy Rembrandt, original formula – large tube. A really nice white is Williamsburg titanium white.
After the 3rd or 4th class, we will begin color. Brands of paint I recommend are: Williamsburg, Old Holland, Vassari, Michael Harding, Robert Doak, and RGH (RGH: An online company in NY who will give you samples if you say you were recommended by Kline Academy)
Here are the paints you will need:
Cadmium red light or French vermillion
Yellow ocher – color varies with different brands, make sure it is not too dark
After 2 weeks add glazing colors:
Transparent red oxide – Rembrandt is okay
Transparent Brown Oxide – Rembrandt if okay
Ultra marine Blue – deep
Alizarin crimson (do not buy the “permanent” Alizarin)
Phthalo Green (aka Thalo)
Chinese Orange (Mussini or Sennelier only)
Naples yellow – Mussini or Sennelier only – Also do not buy Naples yellow light or dark, just plain Naples yellow
Chrome Green Opaque (Also called Chromium oxide green)
Roll of blue tape
Spray fix or cheap hair spray (Hair spray is actually the best)
Thin cotton rags – T-shirts works best NEEDED FOR THE FIRST CLASS
Walnut oil or cold linseed oil
A small container for medium
Palette – light wood palette or disposable palette pad (gray)
Roll of paper towels – Please always bring a roll with you and do not use the one in the bathroom
