Rodeo is a competitive sport that arose from the working practices of Old West cowboys and a bovine desire to break out of nursery-rhyme typecasting. Observe an exciting new role with today’s Groupon: for $14, you get rodeo and dancehall admission for two people at Crider’s Rodeo and Dance Hall in Hunt (up to a $28 value). The rodeo starts at 8 p.m. each Saturday through September 3, and is followed by live music and dancing at 9 p.m. Children under age 6 get in free; children ages 6–12 receive discounted admission.
Since 1925, Crider’s weekly shindigs have filled the air with the warm aromas of barbecue and the jovial sonic bouquet of live country music, cavorting dancers, and one of the state’s longest-running rodeos. Contemporary cowboys compete for cash in six rodeo events that showcase incredible abilities in bull riding, barrel racing, and encouraging a steer to squeeze a stress ball instead of bucking. Younger vaqueros get a chance to flaunt their skills as they mutton-bust and calf-scramble. Post-rodeo, the outdoor stage comes alive with crooning musicians including the Dirt Road Gypsies on August 20 and Jeff Griffith on September 3. Twirling figures do-si-do under the shade of massive oaks, creating spectacle of spinning as impressive as a runaway carousel as revelers feast upon fried catfish and burgers from Crider’s café or shoot pool in the adjoining game room.
