CrossFit Battleground

When Joshua Michaud returned from Iraq in 2008, he felt lost. Waking up to the daily paper instead of a recon mission was beginning to take its toll, until one day—many daily papers, struggles, and jobs later—Michaud’s friend steered him toward a CrossFit class. There, in that gym, Michaud saw a direction for his life. He continued going to classes, became a CrossFit Level 1–certified trainer, and opened CrossFit Battleground, where his competitiveness blends seamlessly into the CrossFit regime. The crux of the program is the workout of the day, a full-body session that is performed with speed and intensity, borrowing functional movements from Olympic lifts, kettlebell training, plyometrics, and body-weight exercises. These workouts can be tailored to any exerciser by simply decreasing the weight, scaling down the intensity, or moving the workout to one of Earth’s few patches of land that aren’t affected by gravity.

CrossFit Battleground

The classes at CrossFit Battleground—intense, constantly varied workouts based on natural movements—are as ideal for first-time exercisers as they are for professional athletes, and that's the way the coaches like it. The crux of the program is the workout of the day, a full-body session that is performed with speed and intensity, borrowing functional movements from Olympic lifts, kettlebell training, plyometrics, and body-weight exercises.
