Built in 1928 as a vaudeville theater, the Crown Uptown Theatre continues its mission of viscerally engaging entertainment with a menu of hearty Italian fare and dramaturgical dessert. This April, the historic stage hosts You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, a musical comedy based on Charles M. Schulz’s classic comic strip Peanuts. Throughout the stretch of a day, lovable blockhead Charlie Brown ponders his character and life in general, even after his cohorts warble the praising title song to him at the play’s opening. Struck by the enigmatic Little Red-Haired Girl, Charlie still can’t muster up the courage to approach her at lunch, leaving him feeling deflated and seeking the off-color psychiatric guidance of bossy know-it-all Lucy.

Despite Charlie’s misfortunes, a collection of whimsical tunes, such as “The Book Report” and “Glee Club Rehearsal” uplift audience spirits, and the final song, “Happiness,” teaches him to appreciate the little things in life and accept himself. The musical is also peppered with comic-specific details, from Snoopy’s Red Baron daydreams to Schroeder’s piano-playing skills and Linus’s signature blanket. These charming touches, along with the musical’s celebration of mankind, bring Schulz’s timeless characters to life more vividly than storing a Snoopy parade balloon in your living room.

Before the curtain opens, guests sit down at tables arrayed throughout the stately auditorium to dig into an Italian-inspired feast. Garlic baguettes soak up cream of asparagus soup and the piquant red sauces that top pork loin, sausage-stuffed pasta shells, chicken parmesan, or a pair of jumbo mushroom ravioli.

Though the Crown Uptown Theatre sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.
