What You'll Get

Today's Groupon gets you four dance classes at Culture Shock Dance Center. The contemporary dance studio is the stomping ground of nationally renowned hip-hop dance team Culture Shock San Diego, a troupe that’s danced at MTV Studios, on NBA and WNBA courts, and at Nike, as well as using dance to save the Earth in the Intergalactic Dance Battle Ultimus, although their memories of this event have been erased. Culture Shock offers break dance, zumba workouts, hip-hop, belly dance, striptease, and more; pick one style to master your craft or mix-and-match to fulfill your wildest dance fantasies involving up to four styles of dance.

Culture Shock's three dance studios occupy 7,800 square feet in a three-story building. The floors are state-of-the-art NeoShok Flooring, shock-absorbent floating sports floors that protect against knee and back strain, and are more fun than usual to jump up and down on. The friendly and experienced instructors can help you glide and gambol so gracefully you’ll outdance the stars and instead dance with beautiful nebulae or super bright quasars.

Busting a move you've never busted before—be it a contemporary ballet move, a cardio hip-hop move, or a well-coordinated move to a nicer part of town, away from that mouthy opossum that keeps opening your mail—is a great way to get exercise, learn a new skill, and meet new and graceful friends. Classes take place throughout the day, six days a week.

SignOnSanDiego.com reviewed Culture Shock:

  • Culture Shock Dance Troupe has distinguished itself as a powerful hip-hop and street dance performance force. Started in San Diego in 1993 by Angie Bunch as a way to teach herself hip-hop, it has expanded across the nation to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Chicago, Atlanta and New York. The work has also gained attention abroad in France, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Portugal and the United Kingdom. – Danielle Briones, SignOnSanDiego.com

Yelpers and reviewers on Insider Pages give Culture Shock Dance Center 4.5 and four stars, respectively:

  • I have attended many different dance studios and none of them has given me ultimate satisfaction as much as Culture Shock has! They have drop in classes which are always convenient and their instructors are wonderful! – Lilia H., Insider Pages
  • Culture Shock has a very wide variety of dance classes including jazz, salsa, hip hop, break dancing, and striptease. The best part is that the classes are drop in so you can go to whatever classes you want whenever you want! – Chelsea H., Insider Pages
  • The classes are usually lots of adults and easy to feel out of place for the younger ones. However if you stick with it, you will fit in just fine. Cultureshock is affordable, colorful, and trendy. Definitely a place to learn new things! – Megan E., Insider Pages

I Could’ve Danced All Night

As uplifting romantic comedies such as They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? have taught us, the only thing more fun than dancing is marathon dancing. Once Culture Shock teaches you the skills, it’s up to you to find the endurance. Fortunately, this hourly breakdown will let you know what to expect from your marathon dance-session:

Hour 1: Soreness. Your feet will be slightly sore, but expect a second wind when they turn on the air conditioners and begin playing the entirety of Pangaea by Miles Davis. Hour 8: Endurance. At most retail jobs, employees are expected to stand for eight hours at a time, so you should be able to effortlessly hit this mark if you are an employee at most retail stores. Hour 15: Mild hallucinations. Remember, the mint-chocolate-chip-colored jaguar that appears to have replaced your dance partner is actually a harmless ocelot. Hour 24: Exhaustion, rage. You begin to wildly curse the various children’s charities sponsoring the event in an unforgiveable outburst captured by local news, and widely circulated and parodied online. Hour 30: You did it! Collect your prize, a $15 gift certificate for shoe repair, and get a friend to wheelbarrow you home, victorious.
