About Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

Most National Historic Landmarks are quite literally set in stone. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, though, is an exception: its steam-operated trains move constantly, chugging along a stretch of rail extending from Colorado to New Mexico.

1. The experience is steeped in history.

Originally built in 1880, the line was an engineering marvel for its time. It was also essential to the booming silver mining industry of the time, although no modern riders have stumbled on more than a few metric tons of ore yet.

2. The ride is scenic.

A complete ride passes through 64 miles of mountain passes, steep gorges, and sprawling flatlands. It's even more beautiful on sunset rides, when everything is suffused with golden light.

3. Passengers can enjoy a romantic Sunset Train ride

The line's "Cumbre Sunset Train" rides begin in Chama, NM and climb through the mountains to Cumbres Pass at 10,015 ft. Enjoy the live music and the beautiful, sunset views of the Rocky Mountains.

4. There's lunch. Serious lunch.

Morning rides ferry passengers to an all-you-can-eat buffet lunch at Osier station, featuring eats worthy of Thanksgiving dinner: whole, golden-brown roasted turkeys, for instance, as well as salads and three types of pie.
