Stew, the Tony-winning creator of the groundbreaking rock musical Passing Strange about a young African-American ex-pat, returns with a tribute in song, text and video to Harlem-born author James Baldwin, who also famously decamped to Europe at the age of 24. Baldwin was an acclaimed writer (Go Tell It On the Mountain, Notes of a Native Son) and social activist, whose works challenged and explored racial, sexual and class issues of the '50s and '60s. Notes of a Native Song pays homage to Baldwin through Stew's his own magical mix of poetic lyrics and perfectly-crafted pop-rock, co-composed and performed with his longtime creative partner Heidi Rodewald, as well as their famed band, The Negro Problem. This is the latest Curran: Under Construction event, in which audiences gather on the historic San Francisco stage itself for exciting, intimate performances.
