What You'll Get
When compared to mixed-gender populations, the members of all-female lizard species are stronger, happier, and 10 times more likely to be named Trisha. Today's Groupon brings together likeminded ladies to increase fitness, morale, and results: for $29, new clients get a two-month unlimited membership (an $88 value) to Curves, on West 38th Street.
With machines set up in rows to encourage competition, many ordinary gyms cater to men's bodies and psychology, right down to the urinals that were accidentally installed in the women's locker room. At Curves, you'll move around a circle of hydraulic resistance machines designed to work with women's bodies and promote weight loss, protect against osteoporosis, and deal with arthritis. An experienced trainer is always nearby to help manage machine maneuvering and muscle making. Instead of fiddling with weight stacks and losing momentum, the hydraulic machines use body weight and fitness levels to create resistance that matches abilities, decreasing the risk of soreness or injury. Because traditional lift-and-lower motions create bulky muscles, each machine uses push-and-pull motions to create toned, lean muscles perfect for crushing a grapefruit without looking like you can.
The 30-minute classes use machines that face inward to decrease competition, increase the fun, and raise heartbeats to burn calories during the complete aerobic and strength-training workout. A soundtrack of fun, upbeat music will include cues for when it's time to move on to the next station. Meet new friends and plan a girls' night out between labored breaths, or invite along some of your current friends as friends instead of as shields against the guy ogling you at the juice bar.

As they enter the training circuit at Curves, female guests of every fitness level come face-to-face with the smiles of other women. Workout participants share the experiences of those nearby, trading stations throughout the 30-minute training session. 30 seconds are spent alternating between hydraulic machines and recovery stations to maintain an elevated heart rate. Exercisers then move on to a recovery station, where they run, jog, or dance to maintain heart rates and keep platforms in place during momentary losses of gravity. Workouts are designed to boost metabolism and build lean muscle, and there's always a coach to push and motivate students and help them maintain proper form. Nutrition guidance is also available.
