Yes, my Groupon purchase allowed me to try Curves ( #202 - 1595 McKenzie Avenue, Victoria BC) without committing to their one-year membership. And with the incentive that if I was to join, the start up membership fee would be waived. After the one month my results were amazing - lost 9 1/2 pounds and 15 inches all over!! Thank you Curves and Groupon - team effort! Needless to say, I have joined their 1 year membership :)

The Curves in my area has early opening hours, but also early closing. As a night person, and someone who works during the day, I could use more flexibility in the early evenings -- especially on Friday and Saturday. I also do not like that it is closed on Sunday.

What You'll Get

When compared to mixed-gender populations, the members of all-female lizard species are stronger, happier, and 10 times more likely to be named Trisha. Today's Groupon brings together likeminded ladies to increase fitness, morale, and results: for $30, you get a one-month unlimited basic membership to Curves (a $171.36 value) at eight Victoria-area locations: Central Saanich, Langford, McKenzie, Oak Bay, Royal Oak, Sidney, Sooke, and View Royal/Esquimalt.

Members at Curves, a fitness center designed exclusively for women, rotate around a circuit of hydraulic resistance machines that have been designed to work with female bodies and promote weight loss, protect against osteoporosis, and deal with arthritis. An experienced trainer is always nearby to help manage participants’ machine maneuvering and muscle making. Instead of fiddling with weight stacks and losing momentum, the hydraulic machines use your own body weight, fitness level, and aerodynamic water bottle to create resistance that matches abilities, decreasing the risk of soreness or injury. Because traditional lift-and-lower motions create bulky muscles, each machine uses push-and-pull motions to create toned, lean muscles perfect for crushing a grapefruit without looking like you can.

For 30 minutes, limbering ladies move around a circuit that positions machines inward so that they'll have a chance to share laughs and secret handshakes with fellow fitness frontierswomen. Because each workout warrior is at a different station, the only competition that exists is with one's own burgeoning muscles. A soundtrack of fun, upbeat music includes cues that tell participants it's time to move on to the next station. The complete aerobic and strength-training workout raises heart rate and burns calories while allowing women to meet new friends, arrange a girls' night out between labored breaths, or plan a wardrobe of revealing bikinis for their newly svelte doppelgänger action figures.

The Fine Print

Promotional value expires Mar 14, 2012. Amount paid never expires. Limit 1 per person, may buy 2 additional as gifts. Limit 1 per visit. Valid only at listed locations. Merchant is solely responsible to purchasers for the care and quality of the advertised goods and services.

About Curves

As they enter the training circle at Curves, female guests come face-to-face with the smiles of other women. And just as points on a circle share a common distance from the circle's center, workout participants share the experiences of those nearby, trading stations throughout the 30-minute training session. One minute is spent on a piece of strength-training equipment built for feminine frames and designed to work two opposing muscle groups with a single movement. Exercisers then move on to a recovery station, where they run, jog, or dance to maintain heart rates and keep platforms in place during momentary losses of gravity.

In 2014, Curves partnered with celebrity fitness expert Jillian Michaels to design a new take on its traditional circuit. These workouts incorporate functional bodyweight exercises—each with modifications—into the existing sequence, providing a slightly more intense gym experience intended to jump-start metabolisms while still forging lean, toned muscles.
