If you’re hungry for laughs, hunger no further than Dad’s Garage Theatre Company, voted Creative Loafing’s Reader’s Pick for Best Theater Company and Best Improv Group five years in a row. Today’s Groupon gets you and your friends (buy up to four Groupons to share) into any one of Dad’s Garage Thursday through Saturday improv or scripted shows at Inman Park near Little Five Points, including:

  • Improv Revolution (Thursdays, 10:30 p.m.): In the first half of this performance, watch American Idol, Dad’s Garage-style. It’s up to you who becomes America’s next big star or who lands in a giant foam smoothie. During the second half, the Bionic Man is back in the lost episodes of the unfinished 1974 TV series The Six Million Dollar Man.
  • Scandal! Under the Big Top (Fridays, 10:30 pm): Watch Atlanta’s only improvised soap opera, following the laugh-out-loud antics of a scandal-filled circus.
  • TheatreSports (Saturdays, 10:30 pm): This is improv competition at its finest. Watch two teams of improvisers, a host/referee, and a team of judges boo, hiss, and audibly smile throughout.
  • Fingertips: 21 Short Works Inspired by Our Favorite Band (Thursdays–Saturdays in July, 8 p.m.): A compilation of 21 theater and multimedia pieces—everything from puppets to movies–inspired by every track on an album from Dad’s favorite band (you’ve got to see the show to find out the band). Some pieces were written by local and national playwrights including Travis Sharp of the award-winning Song of the Living Dead.

The upcoming Dad’s season hasn’t been announced yet, but keep checking the calendar for more dates. Make sure to plan ahead and make reservations because seats fill up fast.

Dad’s Garage gets great reviews across the Internet. On Kudzu, theater-goers rate Dad’s Garage a perfect five stars; Citysearchers give it 4.5 stars:

  • This place is great fun for everyone. On Saturday mornings, they do a improv play for kids that is fantastic. For adults, it’s a perfect night out for a date or friends. The small theather [sic] makes it feel like you’re a part of the act (and sometimes you can be). It’s a refreshing place to see non-traditional plays. If you haven’t been, it’s a must. A true gem of Atlanta. –BanjoMarie, Kudzu
  • Dads is great. I have never seen a bad show there. –tyrussma, Kudzu
  • In addition to the quality shows and pure genius improv, the casual, comfortable atmosphere makes you feel right at home from the moment you step through the door. The people there are amazing – both on and off-stage. The humor is creative and intelligent, with just the right amount of quirk. It’s always a great time. There’s nowhere else quite like it. Just be warned that you’ll feel a strange gravitation to return as soon as possible. –xenola, Citysearch

Printable List of Improv Suggestions

At the beginning of each improv show, the performers ask the audience for a suggestion. This frequently results in 10 to 20 minutes of awkward silence, followed by the performers leaving the stage, until an hour of silence passes and a bold audience member finally speaks up with the brilliantly conceived suggestion fart, but his genius call rings coldly across the quiet stage, too tardy to be hilariously interpreted by the cast.
