Award-winning choreographer Raphael Xavier takes hip-hop techniques from the street to the stage with The Unofficial Guide to Audience Watching Performance. The performance piece explodes onto the stage at D.C.’s Dance Place, combining street dance choreography with a conversational monologue that blends spoken word, poetry and rap lyrics written over the course of 20 years. Xavier tells the autobiographical story of an artistic journey defined by sacrifice, passion and transcendence. Presented in collaboration with Hi-ARTS, this performance sets out to support hip-hop as a vibrant urban art and culture movement and to address the socio-political issues relevant to the hip-hop generation.
