Hypnotize postal workers with your flagrant disregard for gravity with today's Groupon to Dance Place. You'll get five drop-in dance classes for $35 (a $75 value). Dance Place offers classes in African dance, modern dance, salsa, belly dance, and hip hop. Classes are offered most weekday mornings and evenings and Saturday mornings and afternoons (Dance Place is closed Fridays), so it's easy to drop in on a whim to hone your hip shimmies and razor-sharp elbows. Check out Dance Place's schedule for individual class times.

The expert instructors at Dance Place (which is located only two blocks from the Brookland/CUA Redline Metro stop) will break each dance down into easy-to-follow instructions and give you individual attention if you need help. Your Groupon is good for any five classes, so you can drop into a few sessions of the same style or cross-pollinate multiple styles of fancified footwork. In modern and African dance classes, you'll have the opportunity to feel the vibrations of the music through your whole body with live musicians on piano or drums, and optional tiny musicians clinging to your shoulder blades. When music is played live in class, the rhythms become more palpable and your movements sync up to give you a better workout and a deeper sense of connection to the dance. In salsa class, you'll participate in a fun call-and-response circle dance and have a chance to meet new amigos.

With the possible exception of jackhammering, dance is the only form of exercise that allows you to look graceful while practicing it. And while you won't often see Pilates practitioners or iron pumpers making much money in the subway, the crisp pops, locks, and undulating belly-dancing moves you pick up at Dance Place will be sure to fill your overturned derby hat with pocket watches, jewelry, and homemade brownies. Go with a friend you'd like to get close to or come alone to dance with strangers when they're awake, for a change.

New customers only.

Reviews

Though few have reviewed its classes, the Washington Post has featured Dance Place's studio and theater, praising its role as a community arts center. Meanwhile, Yelpers give it an impressive 4.5 stars:

  • Hiding out in a quiet Northeast neighborhood, Dance Place is one of the few theaters that consistently presents the latest in local, cutting-edge dance talent….Dance Place also services the community. It has brought in over 200,000 underprivileged schoolchildren to watch performances and participate in summer camps that teach them about dance and life skills. – Nicole Lewis, Washington Post

About Dance Place - DC

Dance Place first leapt onto the scene more than three decades ago as an educational and performing arts company that toured local schools. In the years since, it has grown into a multi-faceted operation and source of both entertainment and instruction.

Every weekend, Dance Place dazzles crowds with performances in modern dance, African Dance, performance art, and spoken word. Rather than hiring a sketch artist to doodle each dance step into a flipbook, spectators can learn the moves they see on stage by enrolling in one of Dance Place's programs, or by dropping into an adult or children's class. Dance Place has remained true to its roots through its continued support of local schools, and to this day organizes family-friendly performances, workshops, and school assemblies.
