Helmed by danceuse and professional competitor Debra Ann, Danceworx’s knowledgeable instructors guide students of all abilities through weekly and drop-in classes focused on fostering a safe, friendly learning environment. Tandem movers can synchronize their heart rates during a four-week group dance class, familiarizing feet with dance styles such as beginner Salsa, intermediate West Coast swing, and advanced hokey pokey. Class sizes remain small to ensure personalized attention and an intimate atmosphere. Three times a year, the Discover Dance program grants nascent Astaires access to six beginner classes throughout the course of one day. As toes twinkle through the kinetic buffet of dance styles, from country to ballroom, pupils determine which form awakens their rose-chewing alter ego. After an ebullient day of step sampling, students cap off the evening with a social dance lesson.
Alternatively, fledgling hoofers can polish their moves during drop-in dance classes at the German Canadian Harmonie Club on select Saturday nights. Once the 30-minute lesson draws to a close, pupils show off their newly minted rug-cutting prowess through a Social Dance party bolstered by modern tunes. Revellers need not worry about bringing along a partner or skilled shadow to social parties, as Danceworx encourages dancers to mix and mingle. Savvy instructors remain on hand throughout the party to answer questions, correct footing, and deliver congratulatory winks. Students should arrive at classes sporting comfortable togs, swaddling feet in soft, leather-soled footwear. Peruse the online FAQ section for more information.
At DanceWorx, competitive dancer and instructor Debra Selzler teaches an everyman approach to dancing—her steps are suited to all body types and can be altered to accommodate dancers of all experience levels. She teaches more than 15 genres of dance, from ballroom to country to swing, in weekly classes that stand alone as self-contained routines. Her classes are very social; attendance is split almost evenly between couples and singles, so partners rotate frequently to give everyone a chance to cut a rug. During classes and dance parties, students whirl across the dance floor with partners of varying skill levels, leading and following styles, and number of left feet cast in lead. The dance parties give pupils a chance to show off their freshly learned moves and in a nightclub setting while learning from others before taking their twinkle toes to upcoming weddings or nights out on the town. For students who want to try a little bit of everything, she leads an all-day Discover Dance program, which introduces fancy feet to five dance styles in 45-minute snippets.
