If you've never had authentic Neapolitan pizza, then what you think is pizza might in fact be a cunningly disguised pretzel. Today's Groupon clears up the confusion. For $14, you get $30 worth of Neapolitan pizza, sandwiches, salads, pasta, and more at Dante Pizzeria Napoletana. The restaurant is closed on Mondays in observance of Italy's six-day weeks.
Dante Pizzeria is Omaha's first authentic Neapolitan pizzeria, offering pizza that follows the rigorously strict VERA guidelines, an international trade organization that certifies authentic Neapolitan pizzerias. Each creation is made of traditional dough, topped with fresh mozzarella stretched at Dante Pizzeria daily, and slid into a specialized, wood-fired, 800º inferno. After antipasti such as salumi (prosciutto, speck, coppa, lardo, and mortadella, $15) or calamari fritti ($12), order up the pizza margherita (tomato, basil, and mozzarella, $12) or pizza Giuseppe (sausage, roasted peppers, cipollini, and mozzarella, $15). Alternative pies like the white-sauced pizza Dante (prosciutto, basil, garlic, chili, mozzarella, and potato, $14.50) and non-pizza pasta dishes such as maccheroncini Bolognese (pork, beef, and red wine, $14) grant both deliciousness and nods of approval from that one guy in Omaha who is allergic to traditional pizza. Before you go, snag some gelati or one of the daily tarts ($5.50 each) for dessert. Dante also features an all-Italian wine list. Check out the full menu here.
Although the wood-fired oven is a big feature of Dante's relaxed atmosphere, it's not as enjoyable to step inside as the entertaining indoor bocce court. Dante's full 40-foot indoor bocce court makes a trip to the pizzeria a dining experience and a social event. Bring friends and spend the short wait for your pizza learning the 7,000-year-old game, or split into two teams post-feast to battle it out with wooden balls as the weapon of choice. Before the match, study the food-to-mouth coordination of your dinner mates to be sure you don't partner with the sluggish one who hogged the appetizers.
- Liked it so much, that I took my wife back that same night for dinner. Had one of the -best- risotto's I've ever had, easily the best in Omaha. – ace3, Urbanspoon
- We have dined at Dante twice and each time have come away very happy! Good wine, great authentic Italian food with fresh ingredients and an extremely comfortable atmosphere. Chef Nick's goal to use ingredients from local vendors, farmers and suppliers is awesome! – susan, Urbanspoon
- Top notch all around - try adding egg as a topping on your pizza, it is to die for. This was my second visit and it was even better than the first time (which was great). – OpenTable.com user who dined on 2/19/2010
