Ice rinks first opened their doors to in-house restaurants when hockey players and figure skaters began building small cooking fires on the ice and grilling atop Zamboni engines to keep energy levels up. Enjoy sated skating with today's Groupon to Darien Ice Rink and the in-house Behind the Net Snack Bar. While the ice rink will reopen for public skating on July 5, the snack bar remains open throughout repairs. Choose from the following options:
• For $18, you get two admissions, two skate rentals, and $15 worth of concessions (up to a $37 value).
• For $11, you get two admissions and two skate rentals (up to a $22 value).
• For $7, you get $15 worth of concessions.
Behind the Net Snack Bar fuels the ice-gliding escapades of Darien Ice Rink's patrons with a full menu of specialty thin crust apizzas, sandwiches, and smoothies. Each gourmet apizza arrives crafted in chef Derek's New Haven style, with specialty combinations such as shrimp with broccoli ($16.75) and Deyulio's sausage with hot oil ($15.75). Breakfast sandwiches allow skaters to embrace each morning with egg, bacon, and cheese on a hard roll ($3.75), and fruit smoothies keep ravenous appetites quelled with liquefied strawberries, raspberries, mangos, still-life portraits, or bananas ($4+). Homemade dough provides a flaky frontier for each apizza, upon which diners can stake their own signature claims with more than 20 ingredients to choose from. Each weekend, chef Derek unleashes his signature white clam apizza, a creation made with hand-shucked clams and the tastiest seasoning of all—fire.
Grab a friend or a soon-to-be more-than-friend, check out the public skating schedule, and lace up a pair of rental skates for a few memorable laps around the newly repaired ice rink. Pleasantly chilled pairs can practice their solo or partner moves, or simply enjoy the satisfying swish of their skates’ blades slicing through the manmade crystals, an audible reminder of mankind’s dominance over the elements.
