The call of the wild is like a call from an elderly grandparent: though you can’t quite make out what’s being said, you feel better about yourself when you answer. Pick up nature's phone with today's Groupon: for $39, you get a rappelling-skills workshop from DarkHorse Leadership in Orem (a $95 value).
Set among the rust-colored rocks in the Utah County mountains, two American Canyoneering Association certified instructors lead adventurous groups through basic rappelling and canyoneering workshops. After a thorough safety briefing, students strap into a harness, helmet, and rappel device before looping instructor-provided ropes into secure anchors. Once safely affixed to the mountain face, student and instructor step gingerly over the lip of the 40- to 90-foot tall cliff and begin their descent, learning how to slow and stop the gravity's determined pull with a folder of blackmail photos. During the half-day workshop, visitors learn the necessary skills to thrive on their own rappelling excursions, from tying the anchor to freeing tangled gear from the ropes to ascending the sun-warmed rocks. Climbers of all experience levels can engage as much or as little as desired to suit their comfort zones, as beginners take the time to slowly get acquainted with their gear and more advanced rappellers race mountain goats up and down the cliff side.
