What You'll Get
In today's fast-paced world, some things just need to be faster, such as the post office's turtle carriers, the NFL's eventual replay system, and cement-filled hourglasses. Pick up the pace with today's Groupon: for $55, you get a Brasingtown Tower ticket (a $90 value), plus a hot dog (a $4 value) and soda (a $3 value), at the Showtime Southern 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race on Saturday, May 7 at Darlington Raceway (a $97 total value).
In what has become a Mother's Day weekend tradition, Darlington Raceway again hosts NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, 2010 winner Denny Hamilin, and more as they attempt to conquer one of the sport's most hallowed speedways. As one of Darlington's elevated grandstands, Brasington Tower overlooks Turn 1 of the egg-shaped track—called "too tough to tame" for its unique and tricky design that challenges even the most experienced NASCAR drivers. Once the green flag drops at about 7:30 p.m., NASCAR's charioteers hurtle around the 1.366-mile oval at speeds of up to 200 mph, sometimes scraping their paint against the walls—thereby earning their "Darlington Stripe"—as they navigate the track's narrow, banana-peel-ridden third and fourth turns.
To commemorate Mother's Day weekend, many of the drivers' moms participate in the pre-race events, such as handing drivers the keys before the customary "gentlemen, start your engines, and your curfew is 11 o'clock" command. Though the race doesn't begin until 7:30 p.m., gates open at 2 p.m.
