Darn Good Food
Surprisingly enough, Darn Good Food founder Ron Henoud was inspired by some of the most maligned edibles in history—hospital food. When a bout with cancer left him eating the stuff for four months, he realized how much he had under-appreciated fresh, healthy food. Once cancer-free, Ron ditched his corporate job, teamed up with an executive chef and a dietitian, and set to work conceptualizing the menu for the nutritious, quick-service eatery that would become Darn Good Food.
It's not just healthfulness and speed that Ron and Co. seek in their recipe choices, however; they also place a premium on ingredients sourced locally. They then transform these ingredients into dishes inspired by international cuisines—you can order greek-yogurt parfaits at breakfast, non-fried chicken and spicy pork sandwiches at lunch, and free-range chicken with couscous at dinner. When perusing the quick-serve menu—which includes calorie counts and dietary pointers—diners might be surprised by refined elements such as white-bean ragout and organic quinoa pilaf, but Ron swears their food comes from a very humble place. After all, they're inspired by these words from Julia Child: "You don't have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces—just good food from fresh ingredients."
