Those who know they learned everything they need to know in kindergarten know that painting ceramics is an explosion of creative awakening on par only possibly with the popsicle-stick, log-cabin-building, and macaroni-gluing that spur kindergarten imaginations to glowing realms of ecstatic craftitude. With today's Groupon, $20 gets you $50 worth of pottery to paint at Daydreams Ceramic Cafe in Chula Vista.

Whoever decided that tracing one's hand resembles a turkey created irreversible damage. But you can take back arts and crafts by painting a tea set, picture frame, bank, vase, or dinnerware with the The Birth of Venus, Venus of Urbino, or Venus at Her Mirror; then Daydreams will glaze and fire it. Pieces are usually ready within a week, and there are no studio fees (pieces range in price from $8 to $80, averaging around $25). Daydreams Ceramic Cafe specializes in clay prints of baby (or baby puppy) feet and hands (or paws) that make adorable relics of adorable days-gone-by for when your baby or baby puppy grows up and gets feet or paws too big to fit on dinner plates (which start at $30).

The roomy, comfortable studio is a great place to get friends together for a small ceramics gathering, ceramics raves, or first ceramics date raves. If you don't know how to paint or paint the Venus, the friendly staff can help you create a wildly innovative, beautiful, or conspicuous plate, pitcher, or gift. Kids love learning crafts, so get multiple Groupons and make it a family affair; or let loose with paint-slinging thrills on a girls’ night out or all-ages bachelor party. The possibilities of painted pottery are as limitless as your painted-pottery imagination imagines them to be.

About Daydreams Ceramic Cafe

Creative clients brush layers of vibrant, nontoxic paint onto a wide selection of pieces at Daydreams Ceramic Café. The wood- and earth-tone-accented shop, with a feel akin to a rustic winery, lines shelves with blank bowls, vases, mugs, and figurines. After a creative slathering, staff members glaze each piece and fire it in in the café's 2,000-degree kiln for up to two days, rendering it glossy and safe for food, microwaves, dishwashers, and teething pets. The café charges no studio fee for its visiting artists and allows them to return as many times as necessary to complete their masterworks—features which may have helped it to snag a 2011 Best Arts & Crafts award from CityVoter.
