When asked how to get to Carnegie Hall, conductor Leonard Bernstein would always reply, "Practice, practice, and bring a $20 bribe for the stagehand." Enjoy equally sound advice with today's Groupon: for $270, you get one week of kids' rock-music camp from DayJams (a $545 value). Camp runs Monday, August 1, through Friday, August 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for kids ages 8 through 15.
Under the seasoned eyes of DayJams’ instructors, rocking campers immerse themselves in music, join bands, sharpen instrumental skills, and practice a portfolio of professional skills. To fully fuel power chords, students of all skill levels tune up one of six instruments, including guitars, basses, drums, keyboards, and vocal chords, or trays of half-swallowed water glasses (guitarists and bass players must bring their own instruments). While writing original rock songs, bandmates bond by creating logos, T-shirts, and CD covers to market their band to screaming fans and beaming families at a recorded live performance on the last day of camp.
Like real rock bands, campers work a strict 9 to 5 day, joining like-skilled instrumentalists or vocalists in lessons, practicing with bands under the supervision of a personal manager, and periodically relaxing overworked ears with a variety of activities, including art and sports. During expert-led clinics, musicians absorb knowledge on branding, lyric writing, and arranging a mind-blowing pyrotechnics display.
