Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra concludes its Kettering Health Network SuperPops series, which celebrates the power and diversity of popular music, with a tour through American jazz history. Versatile trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling, artistic director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, joins conductor Patrick Reynolds and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra to showcase the syncopated stylings of jazz legends Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, and Duke Ellington, whose blue notes caused a sensation before the invention of the color stereo.
The Schuster Center's grand yet intimate 2,300-seat Mead Theatre was engineered for acoustic excellence by the designers of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and Severance Hall in Cleveland, Ohio. The Mead Theatre’s breathtaking Grand Dome pays homage to Dayton’s own Wright Brothers, replicating the starscape that Wilbur and Orville saw before their first flight; accordingly, audience members are expected to substitute enthusiastic arm-flapping for traditional clapping applause.
