The Issue: Prevalence of Bullying Among Students
40% of teachers and school staff consider bullying a moderate or major problem in their schools, and 32% of students aged 12–18 say they have experienced bullying, according to 2011 research cited in a report by The Bully Project. The Internet has provided another avenue for bullying that reaches beyond school walls. Nationwide, more than 13 million children aged 6–17 were victims of cyber bullying during this past school year, according to a Fight Crime: Invest in Kids poll helmed by state and local officials in Pennsylvania, including the attorney general.<p>
The Campaign: Raising Awareness About Bullying at School
Bully, which was directed by Sundance- and Emmy-award-winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch, chronicles the stories of five students and their families over the course of the 2009–2010 school year. The film addresses some of the most severe outcomes of bullying, including incarceration and suicide. It also serves as a call to action for students, parents, teachers, and communities to combat bullying violence. See below to view a trailer of the film.<p>
The Bully Project, a social-action campaign inspired by Bully, launched its 1 Million Kids Initiative through DonorsChoose.org in the spring of 2012. The campaign aims to reach one-million students across the country with film screenings of the documentary. Help The Bully Project reach its goal with this campaign:<p>
- With every $10 donation, The Bully Project and DonorsChoose.org can send 5 students to see Bully, with help from an anonymous matching donor. The matching donor will add $30 to every $10 donation.
- With every $20 donation, The Bully Project and DonorsChoose.org can send 10 students to see Bully, with help from an anonymous matching donor. The matching donor will add $60 to every $20 donation.
- With every $50 donation, The Bully Project and DonorsChoose.org can send a class of 25 students to see Bully, with help from an anonymous matching donor. The matching donor will add $150 to every $50 donation.<p>
All donations will be matched up to a $500,000 total by an anonymous donor.<p>
Walking the halls and leading the classrooms of a Bronx high school, Charles Best, the founder of DonorsChoose.org, encountered firsthand the effects of the scarcity of learning materials facing many of America’s public schools. In 2000, he created DonorsChoose.org to connect community members directly with the need in distressed public schools, through specifically targeted campaigns that produce clear results. Initiated by public schoolteachers, the campaigns range from requests for violins for a school recital to microscope slides for a biology class. Donors can contribute as little as $1, and regardless of the sizes of their donations, they receive photos of the project in action, thank-you letters from teachers, and a cost report detailing how each donation dollar was spent. The organization records the impact of its work with daily data reports. As of September 2012, DonorsChoose.org had raised more than $122 million dollars, supported nearly seven million students, and funded nearly 300,000 projects.
