Choose from Three Options

  • $49 for a map-and-compass course for one (a $115 value)
  • $79 for a map-and-compass course for two (a $230 value)
  • $149 for a map-and-compass course for four (a $460 value)

Throughout the one-day, hands-on navigation course, students combine technical instruction with guided practice in the field to master the puzzle of finding their way in an unfamiliar wilderness. The curriculum covers the basics of orienteering—particularly using a compass and map correctly—as well as more complex skills, such as triangulation, declination, and the meanings of topographical maps’ contour lines. Capped at 12 participants, each course is open to castaways aged 13 and older.

Breztloff and his team of guides train in topics such as canoe instruction, swift-water rescue, and Leave No Trace camping, in which humans depart each campsite as if only a bear had built a fire there. Whether teaching courses or leading expeditions, they help their charges safely enjoy the wilderness with activities such as map-and-compass navigation courses, canoeing trips, and summertime dogsled rides. To make the most of long winters, explorers can strap on snowshoes and trek through the frozen woods or hone their outdoor-survival skills by knitting pine needles into tents on camping trips.
