Choose Between Two Options

  • $75 for 10 tots jiu-jitsu classes for kids aged 3–6, including a uniform (a $225 value)
  • $75 for 10 R.E.A.L. martial-arts classes for kids 6 or older, including a uniform (a $225 value)

During 30-minute tots jiu-jitsu classes, instructors teach wee ones the basics of grappling, with an emphasis on improving coordination and flexibility alongside self-esteem and discipline. The R.E.A.L. martial-arts program draws on the art of kickboxing, augmenting the same lessons as the tots program with teachings on self-control, the jiu-jitsu-based Gracie street self-defence system, and anti-bullying techniques. Across nine locations, instructors hold classes up to seven days a week; see the schedule.

West Coast Martial Arts

Don Whitefield was introduced to martial arts by judo, which he practiced growing up in Germany. He eventually experimented with boxing and, ultimately, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, the art form that has dominated the majority of his training since then. After earning his black belt, he opened West Coast Martial Arts in 2005 to promote the spread of jiu-jitsu along the Pacific. He turned his dojo into an umbrella company that now encompasses multiple schools.

From 23 locations, he and his team of instructors train students of all ages in martial arts. Teaching the grappling and ground-fighting techniques of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, they lead students in battling larger opponents with the holds and submissions of the Gracie street self-defence system. They round out their curriculum with the striking arts of kickboxing and muay thai, which is also called the "science of eight limbs." In this combat style, students unleash flurries of blows using their hands, feet, elbows, and knees, turning into a more fearsome opponent than Bruce Lee before he had his conjoined twin removed.
