Q:

My 16 year old kitty was microchipped 12 years ago. We were told she needed to be re-activated after 5 years which we did not do. Does she need another microchip?

Q:

Do you have to buy a yearly subscription like you do with some tags? Thanks, Mary

Mary P.  asked on  Jun 13, 2012

A:

No, you do not. It is a lifetime microchip. We recommend, as does Home Again, that you update your information annually though (add or change any phone numbers, address, etc.). Home Again will send you an email each year asking you to upgrade for $16, but this is NOT required. The microchip will never become inactive. They will just try to upsell you. Hope that makes sense. Thanks.

Q:

Can I just get the microchip at the time of service or will I have to pay for other services as well such as an exam?

Lauren P.  asked on  Jun 13, 2012

A:

You can just get the microchip when you come into the Shelter. It's possible there could be some wait time if others are in front of you. You do not have to pay for additional services unless you wish to get something additional such as a vaccination, etc. Vaccinations and dog licenses for Jefferson County may be purchased on Wednesday and Friday afternoons between 3-4 pm. Otherwise, if you're just wanting to get the microchip, you can come in during our open hours (Mon-Fri between 11 am - 7 pm and Sat/Sun between 10 am - 6 pm). I would avoid the two clinic times because they will be very busy -- unless you'd like a vaccination or license as well. Thanks!

Q:

Does the animal need to be put to sleep for this? If not, how is the pain level for the animal?

Pam O.  asked on  Jun 13, 2012

A:

Hi, Pam. No, they are not put under for this procedure. It is very similar to giving a vaccination except the gauge (width) of the needle is a tad larger. It's very quick. Thanks!
