Pilots are the cowboys of the air, roaming the wide-open skies and herding children's runaway balloons. Giddy up, up, and away with today's Groupon: for $119, you get an introductory flight lesson at Cool Air’s Sioux Falls Flight School (a $239 value). Preflying ground-school sessions are available Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and are subject to a minimum of six students. Flights are also available Saturday and Sunday.
Cool Air’s Sioux Falls Flight School’s FAA-certified instructors oversee duos of novice pilots as they navigate celestial spheres on the wings of an advanced 2006 Cessna Skyhawk. During a 90-minute training session in ground school, experienced instructors acquaint students with the plane’s Garmin G1000 cockpit and elucidate the basics of flying, a practice that has confounded ostriches for centuries. After completing ground school, students schedule a daytime session to board planes along with a fellow student for up to one hour of airborne experience. Students take off from Joe Foss Field—adjacent to the Sioux Falls Airport—fly almost 30 miles, land at the Luverne Municipal Airport for a pilot switch, and then return to the original destination.
