Weekly Argentine tango classes teach groups of up to 40 dancers to lead, follow, and improvise steps on the dance floor.
Dancing is a healthy way to physically connect to someone, preferable to giving them a painful bear hug or sewing your head onto their body. Get cheek-to-cheek with today’s Groupon to Tango Academy. Choose from the following options:
- For $20, you get a drop-in group tango class for two (up to a $40 value).
- For $25, you get a four-week tango course for one person (up to a $75 value).
- For $45, you get a four-week tango course for two people (up to a $150 value).
The four-week tango course begins on February 21, and all classes will be held on Tuesdays at Mackenzie Hall from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. If that class fills up, a second class will be added from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Tango Academy’s Zubair Syed, who coordinated Toronto’s first Argentine tango festival in 2005, strives to bring people together through group dance lessons recently profiled by the Windsor Star. Up to 40 students of all ages and experience levels show up to weekly classes alone, with a partner, or with a mannequin on roller skates to learn the argentine tango’s elegant, improvisational style. Dancers develop flexibility and confidence while practicing leading techniques, such as maintaining rhythm and keeping pairs from bumping into other couples. Followers learn how to stay balanced and interpret subtle cues from the leader when they need to stop, turn, or perform an embellishing move. Students should wear snug-fitting shoes ideally made from leather or suede and flexible clothing or a tuxedo made of spandex. Street shoes are not allowed.
