Deadwood Historic Tours offers guided private tours led by local historian Jeannine Guern. The tour is available six days a week and on Sunday by request, starting at 10:00 am (length customizable). Visitors embark on an informative and picturesque journey filled with local history, beginning with Centennial Valley, the original northern entrance to Deadwood, which includes aspects of Native American history, continuing through Deadwood’s Historic Main Street, featuring the historic Days of ’76 rodeo grounds. Participants also visit Mt. Moriah Cemetery, where Wild Bill Hickok is buried alongside other infamous Deadwood characters. Next, the tour heads to Lead, highlighting the mining history of Homestake Gold Mine and the burial site of Peter Thompson, a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor from the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The journey continues to Cheyenne Crossing, a historic stage stop, and then on through Spearfish Canyon, including Roughlock Falls, Spearfish Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls, with ample opportunities to stop for photos.
Jeannine has 25 years of research experience regarding the history of Deadwood and its surrounding areas. She has authored several publications and history books about the Black Hills. The tour is informative, focusing on highlights of Deadwood's landmarks. Once you get into the van, you decide when to stop; if you want to add a stop, just ask.
