The eight- to nine-hour trip begins with sit-on-top kayaking on Byers Lake in Denali State Park. After a lunch break, you’ll switch to a raft that’s fully oared by your guide. Both parts of the trip afford you the chance to observe the local scenery and wildlife, including beavers, loons, bears, and eagles.

Denali Southside River Guides

Byers Lake looks as smooth as glass to a group of kayakers, who gaze at an inverted reflection of Mount McKinley on the undisturbed surface. The moment doesn't last—maybe a loon call cuts the air, or maybe a wedge of trumpeter swans throws waves through the mountain's mirror image—but the kayakers carry the morning's still, quiet image with them throughout the day.

Craig and Shelis Jorgensen, owners of the Talkeetna-based Denali Southside River Guides, unveil the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness through low-impact adventures in and around the waters of Denali State Park. Claiming a team of experienced guides that possesses an extensive knowledge of the area, the Jorgensens coordinate excursions such as rafting down rivers ranging from calm glacial feeds to Class II and III whitewater rapids.

Customer Reviews

Our party of 9 ranged in age from 11 to 62 and everyone had a fantastic time! Of course perfect weather helped too - Denali was out in full glory.

The guides and the trip was amazing, Craig, Carson, and Tej went out of their way to make sure everyone was comfortable and having fun. Fabulous company!!! Outstanding job and well trained. I m deathly afraid of water but did this trip for my son, the guys were great about making me feel comfortable and safe. My son got some one on one training on how to row and judge the river, which he thought was "just to cool". Thank you all so very much!!
