To survive, plants must use their leaves to soak up the sun and their roots to tickle the soil until it forfeits its groundwater. See the struggle for yourself with this Groupon.
$9 for an Avant Garden Event for One, Held Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Up to $18 Value)
Weekly after-hours Avant Garden Events celebrate one global locale per week selected from the Design for a Living World, a collaborative exhibit from the Nature Conservancy and Desert Botanical Garden. Boppart Courtyard undergoes a new transformation each week to resemble such exotic destinations as Costa Rica, Australia, Alaska, and Hoth.
Cuisine and live music specific to each native culture underscore the exhibit's stories of consumer-packaging lifecycles and their impact on the environment. Ten prominent designers from the field display their sustainably re-created household items using sketches, models, and large-scale photography by Ami Vitale.
Desert Botanical Garden
A kaleidoscope of multichromatic blossoms and emerald leaves bursts from the soil, blanketing 65 acres of desert landscape at Desert Botanical Garden. Diverse walkways flanked by more than 1,200 types of cacti, succulents, and wildflowers educate visitors on the importance of protecting the environment and not hugging every plant they see. In addition to the garden's more stationary organisms, some of which go home with local green thumbs during biannual plant sales, numerous avian and insect species make their homes amid the thriving greenery.
