Summer camp provides kids with lasting memories, lifelong friendships, and the opportunity to capture flags without causing an international incident. Give kids something to do with today’s Groupon: for $155, you get a Techno Robot Creators summer camp, taking place August 1–5 to Destination Science, located at UCSB (a $319 value). This Groupon is also valid for any week of the 2012 summer camp season. Classes run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with extended hours available for an additional fee.
Destination Science—located at UCSB—invites kids to a week of whirlwind brain strengthening to learn the ins and outs of science in a fun and engaging atmosphere. The camp's leaders group troupes of 5–11 year olds by grade before diving deep into the diverse realms of mind-tingling scientific discovery, tackling projects on the chosen theme like a linebacker pancaking a poster of a movie-plot summary. During the Techno Robot Creators camp, professional educators help wee ones create automated beings while testing them in a series of exhilarating challenges. After lunch, kiddos put to practice their robotechnic skills in fashioning laser spinners, listening devices, and other electronic gadgets.
Participants’ parents are in charge of dropping off and picking up mini Einsteins, as well as ensuring that they have a sack lunch to feed dayfuls of enlightened inquiry. Should camp schedules conflict with pickup and drop-off times, extended hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. are available for an extra fee to let munchkins kill time by toying with their projects or uninventing the moon.
Build an electric powered roller coaster. Create a superhero mobile. Design and battle a team of robots. Launch rockets to new speeds and heights. The children who engage in these once-in-a-lifetime activities at Destination Science camps aren't just having fun—they're learning science. At over 130 camp locations in six states, counselors lead campers ages 5 to 11 through a full week of hands-on exploration in various disciplines. Aided by kid-friendly tools, entertaining demonstrations, and inventive lesson plans, they teach campers the basics of scientific inquiry through the fun of exploration and experimentation. The four main camps focus on topics ranging from human and marine biology to astronomy, engineering, and physics, often with engaging games and hands-on projects. All of Destination Science's instructors are experienced educators and university students, each focused in the sciences and chosen for their ability to relate to children and build an effective baking-soda volcano.
