Sipping wine grapes in their natural habitat is much more enjoyable than exploring the dank, melancholy caverns of root beer's namesake. Stroll through blissful vineyards with this Groupon.

Choose Between Two Options

  • $19 for admission for two to choice of 2012 wine festival with two glasses of wine (up to a $62 value)
  • $35 for admission for four to choice of 2012 wine festival with four glasses of wine (up to a $124 value)

Festival options include a Fourth of July celebration, a summer sendoff jazz weekend, a rock and roll band fest, and a harvest fright fest. All festivals feature multiple varieties of wine, and live music always decorates the air.

Each attendee receives a glass of wine, chosen from any of five fruit wines or from one of the following: Crimson Glory (a dry red table wine), Alpine Frost (a sweet white blend), Mornin' Deux (a semi-sweet white blend), Meadow Breeze (a blush wine), or sauvignon blanc. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets.

Detour Winery

Detour Winery is not a big-name brand, but this smallish quality is part of the estate's charm. The other part is its location in the shadow of Catoctin Mountain. Here, close enough to Mother Nature to steal her purse, travelers can stop and savor life in the presence of wildflowers, grapes, pavilions, and softball fields.

The proprietor, Daniel Tamminga, cultivate award-winning wines—their current offerings cover all the bases from fruit and dessert wines to reds, whites, and blushes. But they also cultivate a healthy community with wine festivals, youth athletic-program sponsorships, and a summer concert series. They welcome weddings and corporate events onto their property and routinely host winemaking classes to help out new brewers, much to the horror of unstomped grapes everywhere.
