About Detroit Kung Fu Studio
Jason Schoenherr spent his early years as an athlete in organized sports, never training in the martial arts until he enrolled in a kung fu class at the age of 20. In kung fu, he found a practice both physical and mental. The ancient style captured his interest, and he began to study other traditional Chinese martial arts such as tai chi and qi gong. After more than 17 years of training and teaching, Jason—having earned the title of sifu—opened Detroit Kung Fu Studio, his own school at which to provide a traditional kung fu education.
Sifu Jason and his instructors strive to recreate the art of kung fu as it was taught by the Buddhists at the Shaolin Temple or the Taoists at Wudang Mountain. To them, the martial arts were not a method of violence, but a way to end violence and attain enlightenment through a mind-body connection. The staff members foster this goal through the careful construction of a relaxed, friendly environment.
