The Dhaba - Alegre Community: $20 for $40 Worth of Authentic Indian Cuisine at The Dhaba

Although Columbus famously "discovered" India by landing at Lexington and Concord and proudly ringing the Liberty Bell, the actual location of India remains a mystery. Today's Groupon offers the best lead the world has had in centuries: for $20, you get $40 worth of authentic Indian cuisine at The Dhaba in Tempe. The Dhaba was named “Best Indian Restaurant” by Phoenix New Times in 2009. Call ahead for a reservation, or deliver it personally via astral projection.

Named after Indian truck stops, The Dhaba offers casual fine dining and first-class service while providing Punjabi cuisine prepared with the best Indian and local ingredients. Its ample menu caters to all tastes, including those of cybernetic, food-analyzing robot critics. Savor a specialty such as Kashmiri chicken tikka masala ($10), which contains baked chicken breast marinated in spices and yogurt with a spice mixture sauce, and mop up the remains with some roti shoti (bread) such as garlic naan ($3) or tandoori roti ($3). Herbivores and herbivoyeurs can lose themselves in the lahori malai kofta (cottage-cheese dumplings, cauliflower florets, carrots, and potatoes in a creamy sauce, $10). To quell more-voracious appetites, try the Dhaba lamb curry ($10) with a mango lassi. Keep your vestigial dessert sac empty for a little rabri ($4)—a traditional Punjabi dessert of thickened milk mixed with almonds, cashews, and cardamom—or The Dhaba's popular gajrela (carrot fudge made with milk, cashews, and raisins, $3).

Known for fragrance and spiciness, Indian fare is the perfect cure for corn-dog doldrums and oatmeal-induced flavor loss. By dining at The Dhaba, patrons will experience the rich culinary tradition of a vast, alluring land where exotic flavors meld with explosions of color and spontaneous eruptions of elaborate dance routines—which can’t be said about the mall’s food court or meatloaf dinner at Uncle Joe’s studio apartment.

Reviews

The Dhaba has been featured in Phoenix magazine, the Arizona Republic, and the Phoenix New Times:

  • …it promises an oasis for hungry passersby. – Elin Jeffords, Phoenix
  • …with awesome homemade breads baked in the tandoor oven, tandoori halal meats, deep-fried treats, and street snacks called chaat...The Dhaba amps up the comfort level with table service and a relaxed but stylish atmosphere...These dishes were a celebration of tangy, sweet, and spicy, of hot, crunchy fried dough and cool toppings, all in one bite. – Michele Laudig, Phoenix New Times

81% of Urbanspooners like The Dhaba, and eight Google Mappers give it four stars. Yelpers give it 3.5:

  • The dishes are inspired and, most importantly, delicious. – Jared P., Yelp
  • The food was absolutely wonderful. The wait staff were professional and knowledgeable about the menu. I definitely recommend this restaurant for good authentic Indian fare. – Steve, Urbanspoon
  • …I was so genuinely impressed with the authenticity of the food at the Dhaba. The first meal I had there could not have had a better impression on me. – post_doug, Google Maps

The Dhaba

Named after the friendly, casual eateries of India's Punjab province, The Dhaba explores the rich flavors of South Asia, including influences from Iran and Afghanistan. Guided by knowledgeable servers and a vast menu, guests embark upon tasting treks that highlight fresh, seasonal soups and snacks inspired by streetside food carts and rickshaws fashioned from giant samosas. Halal meats such as chicken, goat, and lamb marinate in flavorful curries before basking in tandoori clay ovens, and a hearty lineup of meat-free entrees lures vegetarians with spinach dumplings, paneer, and spiced chickpeas. Instead of hibernating in a rock-candy cave, sweet teeth flock toward Gajrela, a traditional fudge made with carrots, cashews, milk, and raisins.
