Though the Caribbean isles are well-known to outsiders, Caribbean cuisine remains a hidden gem due to tourists frequently subsisting solely off of a paste made from sand, ocean water, and puréed linen pants. Uncover the edible treasure of the tropics with today’s deal: for $9, you get $20 worth of island fare and drinks at Dhat Island in downtown Redlands. With a diverse menu that island hops through an archipelago of tastes, Dhat Island initiates diners into a flavorful culinary tradition brimming with lively spices and supple textures. The belle of the belly ball is the Creole 1/2 chicken, which is chaperoned by a tangy citrus and garlic sauce to an after-party of peppers and onions ($11.95). The uncarnivorous can take on curry vegetables ($8.95), a fresh cabbage, zucchini, and carrot creation that crackles with flavor like a bonfire doused in cumin. Partner your meal with one of Dhat Island's freshly made smoothies or shakes, or take advantage of the restaurant's BYOB policy and bring a bottle of your own bubbly.

About Dhat Island

Dhat Island spawned out of Island, a former catering company specializing in Caribbean and Creole fare. When loyal clients of the catering company began making requests for "that rice" and "that chicken,” it prompted the company’s owners to create a full-fledged restaurant with a new name: Dhat Island. Dhat Island's head chef uses elements from her husband's recipes and blends them with traditional Southern cuisine in a varied menu. Plaintain fritters, oxtail tamales, and bourbon chicken are featured alongside mainstays such as whole red tilapia, which is seasoned, fried, and nestled on a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, and avocados.

In Dhat Island's Sunday Feast series, diners gather around a communal table to enjoy family-style portions of chicken, seafood, and beef and brag about their most recent report cards. For dessert, you can pick from a platter of sugar-dusted beignets.
