Bodies of water are frequently used as metaphors in poetry, due to their unfathomable depths, unknowable sprawl, and unattainable porpoises. Set sail into the enigma with today's Groupon: for $8, you get a two-hour narrated tour of the Detroit River from Diamond Jack's River Tours (up to a $17 value). Tours depart from two separate docks, with Upper Detroit River tours leaving from Rivard Plaza and Lower Detroit River tours departing from Bishop Park in Wyandotte. Tours set sail Thursday through Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. until September 5.

Diamond Jack's River Tours has guided river explorers on a narrated journey of the Greater Detroit area and its history-rich sites since 1991. Guests can opt for one of three tours ($17 for adults, $15 for seniors over 60, and $13 for children 16 and younger) offered by the cruising company:

  • The Upper Detroit River tour drifts past riverfront attractions such as the Manoogian Mansion, the MacArthur Bridge that connects Detroit and Belle Isle, and cloud-scraping edifices along the Detroit Riverfront. Throw octopi of the mind at Joe Louis Arena, or quell potential international incidents with a friendly wave to the residents of Windsor.

  • The Wyandotte-Boblo tour, departing from Bishop Park at 3:30 p.m., traces the trail of the famed Boblo steamers, the ships that carried passengers to Boblo Island throughout much of the 20th century. Imagine what life was like in those pre-sunshine days as you pass mansions, marinas, and more.

  • The Wyandotte Tour, leaving from Bishop Park at 1 p.m., provides photographers and rapid-fire watercolorists with a scenic view of the Grosse Ile lighthouse, as well as Grassy Island, Mamajuda Island, and other aqua-based attractions.

Each two-hour tour is narrated by an experienced guide, who offers anecdotes and trivia on the sights and sounds of the trip. For passengers who work up an appetite while looking at things go by, Diamond Jack's River Tours has snacks, soft drinks, beer, and more available for purchase onboard. Behold the Detroit River's gorgeous shoreline while learning about Detroit's secret history as a Grecian peninsula with today's Groupon for Diamond Jack's River Tours.

Reviews

Diamond Jack's River Tours was featured on About.com and given a four-star average from four Insider Pagers:

  • Detroit has a distinct skyline filled with a variety of architecture -- a fact that is easy to forget when you're driving in the city and struggling to navigate amid its hub-and-spoke street design. – Laura Sternberg, About.com
  • You get a nice view of the river and the city and they sell snacks right on the ship. – Paola M., Insider Pages

Diamond Jack's River Tours

The Detroit River's international waters stretch out for miles in either direction, winding along the Detroit skyline and kissing the Canadian border. As ships snake their way through the current, they pass lighthouses on small green islands, bridges stretched across overhead, and workers milling about on the riverside docks. Building on 20 years of boating, the captains of the Diamond Jack, Diamond Belle, and Diamond Queen let passengers take in these sights to the tune of guided narration as their ships' white and sea-foam green hulls slice through the water. The three ships safely gather up to 250 passengers on their panoramic upper decks or in protected lower cabins. Today, passengers on these storied steel decks can sip beer, wine, and soft drinks or nibble on snacks from an on-board snack bar during tours. Captains also pilot each ship on private group excursions, as well as school field trips past the river's ships, yacht clubs, parks, and docks.
