Beer, like soap, comes in a bar and livens up any shower. Wash your mouth out with today's Groupon: for $20, you get $40 worth of traditional pub fare and pours at The Diamondback Tavern in Ellicott City.

The Diamondback Tavern's chefs, Keith Holsey and Dave Solan, put a contemporary spin on a menu of traditional tavern fare, earning the pub accolades from the Baltimore Sun and Howard Magazine. Wrangling local meats, seafood, produce, and bread, the staff builds fresh sandwiches such as the Testudo ($10.50), which houses garlic-braised pulled pork and caramelized bananas. Two 5-ounce jumbo lump crab cakes ($23.25) cavort with roasted potatoes, and forks swan dive into veggie risotto topped with grilled portobello ($10.50), splashing around in balsamic vinaigrette before taunting spoons with victory laps. Chefs put a spin on traditional irish bangers and mash, seating apple bratwurst from a Baltimore-based meat packer atop garlic-mashed potatoes ($15.25). Chilled local and domestic brews ($3.75+) and sangria blended from a family recipe cleanse palates and put out fires after fire-eating competitions gone wrong. Brunch, served Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., features classic dishes such as steak and eggs with thyme potatoes ($14) and several varieties of eggs benedict ($9-$11), as well as $2 mimosas and bloody marys.

Diners enter under a traditional hanging tavern sign emblazoned with a brown diamondback turtle shell before nestling into a spacious sports bar or dining room. The Diamondback Tavern also hosts open-mic nights and screening events around NFL games to keep ears and eyes entertained as mouths gnaw on the minimalist, modern décor.

Diamondback Tavern

Built by a group of friends interested in camaraderie, cold drinks, and good food, Diamondback Tavern aims to put a contemporary spin on a traditional Maryland tavern, and its pub menu has earned accolades from the Baltimore Sun and Howard Magazine. Wrangling local meats, seafood, produce, and bread, the staff builds fresh sandwiches filled with garlic-braised pulled pork and caramelized bananas, crab-cake platters loaded with two 5-ounce jumbo lump crab cakes, and veggie risotto topped with grilled portobello.

We love coming to the Diamondback Tavern, and will likely be purchasing more Groupons the next time they are available so that we can go back more frequently. The food is delicious and always served promptly with a smile. It has quickly become one of my favorite places to go, and I look forward to going back within a few days!
