Small plates, like DJs, allow for the sampling of many different things, but tend to spark the most reactions when placed on a dinner table. Mind your manners with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of tapas and non-alcoholic drinks at Dick & Jane's Tapas and Martini Bar in Mebane.
Inside Dick & Jane's Tapas and Martini Bar's cozy eatery, stylish square plates frame a menagerie of more than 15 elegant tapas portions. Succulent medium-rare filet mignon slices arrive on toast points to flaunt the latest sautéed-onion fashions in Allie's filet tartines ($9), and the insalata caprese ($6) dresses up layers of fresh tomato and mozzarella with olive oil and basil. The tropical chicken salad ($7) whisks tongue travelers to exotic islands with a blend of chopped chicken, toasted walnuts, a variety of fruits, and a fiber-heavy, nonredeemable plane ticket. Stave off tapas indecision by ordering Jane's sampler platter ($16)—a cascade of five pre-chosen tapas, including tamari almonds and bruschetta, engaged in an intense flavor-off to determine the ruler over all small plates.
Instead of enforcing a dress code of cheesecloth blindfolds, Dick & Jane's Tapas and Martini Bar’s designers throw a romantic haze on dinner with a low-lit, modern look, hanging fixtures, and a soft red-and-black color scheme.
Dick & Jane's Tapas and Martini Bar
Dick & Jane's Tapas and Martini Bar’s entire menu is designed to be sipped, savored, and shared among friends over conversation. Classic tapas include housemade white cheddar pimento cheese, baked brie drizzled with caramel, and shrimp sautéed with chilies, and an equal portion of the menu is devoted to unfussy, bite-sized takes on American comfort favorites—roast beef and brie stuff mini croissants, pulled pork fills a sourdough panini, and smoked salmon or medium-rare filet mignon lie atop tartines. At the bar, beer and wine join 30 martinis that range from a classic dry martini with pimento-stuffed olives to the sneaky Bruce Willis, which looks like a traditional martini but sneaks orange liqueur and white cranberry juice in through the glass’s ductwork.
Beyond the red walls and checkerboard floors of the dining room, bright umbrellas alight on the patio, where little windows in the wooden fence peek out on flower boxes. On the brick wall just above, a recently refurbished antique mural shows a fresh-faced woman cheerily obeying the instruction to Drink Coca-Cola, adding a splash of vintage character to back up the historical downtown Mebane locale. Some nights find Dick & Jane’s serenading their quaint neighborhood with the sounds of live musicians.
