Photographers swiftly capture what sluggish painters cannot, such as the sparkle of a fleeting smile, the identity of media-shy superheroes, or the split-second a peregrine falcon breaks the sound barrier. Attain photographic know-how with today's Groupon: for $49, you get one three-hour Composition in the Field workshop from Digital Photo Academy, with locations in San Francisco, Berkeley, Sausalito, and Palo Alto (a $99 value). Workshops are held Saturdays and Sundays at various times and locations.

Staffed by experienced, professional photographers, Digital Photo Academy teaches shutterbug pupils of all skill levels how to creatively ensnare memories. The Composition in the Field class fans artistic flames during three-hour on-location workshops with an intimate group of up to 10 people.

Sculpt lackluster freeze-frames into vibrant masterpieces as seasoned sharpshooters guide lenses toward flawless lighting, thoughtful framing, and perfectly timed snaps. Students can choose from nine locations, including La Boulange in North Beach, near the Golden Gate Bridge, and Tilden Regional Park, each offering unique photo-honing opportunities, from Saints Peter and Paul Church to the 500-foot-tall monument to lesser-known Adam Sandler films. Schlep your own digital camera and any other equipment, such as a tripod, to the site of your picturesque adventure.

Digital Photo Academy

As memory cards replaced film reels, many photographers—both professional and amateur—felt befuddled by the new technology. That's where Digital Photo Academy stepped in. Since 2007, the business has facilitated workshops that explore all aspects of digital imagery, from operating cameras and uploading digital files to editing images and airbrushing realistic mustaches. Seasoned professionals lead the courses, helping understudies hone their use of light, framing, and timing. Students furnish their own cameras, and can tote along any ancillary equipment such as tripods, laptops, and flashes that relate to the course at hand.
