Photographers swiftly capture what sluggish painters cannot, such as the sparkle of a fleeting smile, the identity of media-shy superheroes, or the split-second a peregrine falcon breaks the sound barrier. Attain photographic know-how with today's Groupon: for $49, you get one three-hour Composition in the Field workshop from Digital Photo Academy, with locations in Morristown, Ocean Grove, and Seaside Heights (a $99 value). Workshops are held on Saturdays and Sundays at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m.
Staffed by professional photographers with a range of experience, Digital Photo Academy teaches shutterbug pupils of all skill levels how to creatively ensnare memories. The Composition in the Field class fans artistic flames during three-hour on-location workshops with an intimate group of up to 10 classmates. Sculpt lackluster freeze-frames into vibrant masterpieces as seasoned sharpshooters guide lenses toward flawless lighting, thoughtful framing, and perfectly timed snaps. Students can choose from three locations—including the Jersey Shore Arts Center— each offering unique photo-honing opportunities, from Clownfest 2011 at the Aztec Ocean Resort to the Frelinghuysen Arboretum to a 500-foot monument to lesser-known vice presidents. Students schlep their own digital cameras and any other equipment, such as tripods, to the site of their picturesque adventures.
Digital Photo Academy
As memory cards replaced film reels, many photographers—both professional and amateur—felt befuddled by the new technology. That's where Digital Photo Academy stepped in. Since 2007, the business has facilitated workshops that explore all aspects of digital imagery, from operating cameras and uploading digital files to editing images and airbrushing realistic mustaches. Seasoned professionals lead the courses, helping understudies hone their use of light, framing, and timing. Students furnish their own cameras, and can tote along any ancillary equipment such as tripods, laptops, and flashes that relate to the course at hand.
