Photographers swiftly capture what sluggish painters cannot, such as the sparkle of a fleeting smile, the identity of a media-shy superhero, or the split second a peregrine falcon breaks the sound barrier. Attain photographic know-how with this Groupon.
Choose from Three Options
- $49 for a three-hour Composition in the Field photography workshop for one (a $99 value)
- $89 for the above workshop for two people (a $198 value)
- $35 for a three-hour Intro to Digital Cameras workshop with added demo (a $75 value)
Composition in the Field workshops equip students with the skills to evoke surprising imagery from everyday surroundings. During each indoor or open-air outing, an experienced photographer guides lenses toward flawless lighting, thoughtful framing, and stealthy snapshots of bald eagles not wearing their hairpieces. Participants should plan to schlep their own digital camera and any other equipment, such as a tripod, to the site of their picturesque locale.
Designed for novice photographers who have just bought or are considering buying a digital SLR or digital point-and-shoot camera, the Intro to Digital Cameras workshop covers the basic elements of both camera styles. Students will learn the mechanics behind the light-controlling aperture on their SLR camera, or find the ideal setting for their point-and-shoot models. The workshop concludes with a demo still life and live-model shoot that lets students apply the shutter knowledge and synonyms for “cheese” they’ve just learned in a practical setting.
Composition workshops are held Saturday and Sunday at various times and locations, and digital-camera intro courses are held at Samy Johnston's Downtown Studio, and both courses are taught by a team of professional photographers. Check out the full schedule for more information.
Digital Photo Academy
As memory cards replaced film reels, many photographers—both professional and amateur—felt befuddled by the new technology. That's where Digital Photo Academy stepped in. Since 2007, the business has facilitated workshops that explore all aspects of digital imagery, from operating cameras and uploading digital files to editing images and airbrushing realistic mustaches. Seasoned professionals lead the courses, helping understudies hone their use of light, framing, and timing. Students furnish their own cameras, and can tote along any ancillary equipment such as tripods, laptops, and flashes that relate to the course at hand.
