Running was popular in Europe long before it caught on in America, which is why most races are measured in kilometers instead of miles and why most of the Pilgrims were eaten by bears. Race to the top of the food chain with today's Groupon: for $45, you get one entry to the mud run on May 5, at The Dirty Hog in Laurinburg (a $92 value).
Designed by U.S. Special Forces and reality-show veterans, The Dirty Hog’s mud run promotes teamwork and tenacity on an untimed 9- to 12-mile trek through mudslicks peppered with obstacle-laden checkpoints. Participants shape their destiny at multiple checkpoint challenges, with each success potentially shortening the trek ahead and each failure earning burdens such as sacks of pig feed or a piglet that must be raised to maturity. The surpassing of tests can also earn mud navigators colored bracelets, tradable for beer, hearty pork fare, and other delights at a free after party awash in live music and celebratory grunts from Lola, the event’s mascot boar. Each runner sips a free beer, hugs a beautiful Hog Girl, and dons a free Hog Tag symbolizing course completion during the closing festivities. Teams cry out victory chants as solo entrants compliment each other on mud stains in the shape of Herbert Hoover’s silhouette.
