Discover the Past

Victoria-based Discover the Past features father-and-son team John and Chris Adams and their team of professional guides and storytellers who lead tour-goers through Victoria’s Old Town, Chinatown, and Heritage neighbourhoods. During January and February, they offer ten different tours on a rotating schedule: Victoria’s Story (in English and in French), Smugglers and Rum Runners, Fernwood Heritage, Rockland Mansions, James Bay Waterfront, Jewish Victoria, Chinese New Year, Love Stories and Scandals, and Saloons and Sex. Tours are held on Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m.

John, one of Victoria's leading historians, Chris, a member of the Victoria Storytellers' Guild, and the other talented guides weave fascinating historical facts with engaging stories about colorful local figures and events on each tour. On the Rum Runners and Smugglers tour, for instance, they discuss why Victoria was the centre of opium processing for all of North America until 1908 and highlight Johnny Schnarr, who smuggled booze in boats he customized with airplane engines. The Scandals, Saloons, and Sex tour reveals the secrets of Johnson Street, the former red-light district.
