Distrito chef Jose Garces wrote the book on Latin American food. Or rather, he wrote two books, The Latin Road Home and Latin Evolution. He's fully earned his expert author status: he's won both a 2009 James Beard award and an Iron Chef title, typically reserved for chefs with an unexplained clanking arm. Below, some of the highlights of his Mexico City–inspired eateries.
The tequila: The bartenders serve 80+ varieties, which diners can sip in fresh fruit margaritas or sample in three-shot flights.
The tacos: Fillings range from classic grilled hanger steak to funkier options, like plantain-crusted mahi mahi or roasted mushroom.
The salsas: The kitchen turns out a kaleidoscope of them. Try guacamole with chips, or pineapple salsa on pork carnitas.
The breakfast: The eatery opens at 7 a.m. daily to serve fusion dishes like a chorizo eggs benedict and tres leches French toast.
