My brother who is an experienced diver took my daughter and my nephew for a beginner lesson. He was very impressed with the teachers and tactics they used. My nephew and daughter greatly enjoyed themselves and look forward to more lessons.

would be better if they used a pool closer to the office/class room.

I really appreciated the opportunity to explore scuba diving. Even though my experience was very encouraging with clear and positive direction, I found that it is not my cup of tea.

What You'll Get

Somewhere far below sea level, the most fashionable critters in the sub-surface world are gracefully strutting their stuff in form-fitting wetsuits with foot-flattering flippers. Grace the coveted underwater runways of exploration with today's Groupon: for $25, you get a Discover Scuba Diving class from Dive n Trips, a $50 value. All the equipment, including tank, mask, flippers, and spear gun, is included. Classes take place in the depths of a heated pool; locations may vary, but sessions are usually held in San Ramon.

A Discover Scuba session lets prospective merfolk blow bubbles, sip on canned Perrier oxygen, and experience an undersea underverse without the expensive investment in equipment and full-blown lessons. Under the watchful fish eye of an experienced, half-dolphin instructor, divers submerge into a warm-water pool, learning basic techniques and safety precautions while getting a feel for the gear, gizmos, and gadgets, while also experiencing the wonderful tingling sensations that are most certainly not jellyfish attacks, but miniature particles of thrill. There is one class offered per month; the next is June 6 in San Ramon.

Though the class won't churn out scuba divers certified to dive alone, it might finally put to rest a persistent fear of bathtubs and really big puddles. Though breathing underwater can feel a little a strange at first, it quickly becomes second nature after a bit of submerged practice. Post-class, prepare to be able to shower for hours, retrieve all the coins from the bottom of every fountain, and diffuse nuclear bombs perched perilously above an abyssal alien city. Call ahead to schedule a class time.

Divers must be 10 years of age or older, and those under 15 must take the class with a parent, guardian, or especially caring lobster. Dive n Trips is closed over Memorial Day weekend; call to make an appointment starting June 1.
