Q&A with Joel Thompson, Owner/instructor
When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?
I was a whitewater and sea kayak instructor and guide for nine years, so stand-up paddleboarding felt like the perfect extension of my love of the water. I have also raced in many different bike disciplines and attempt to ride or exercise outside daily. I started Dog Star Adventure Tours in order to share my passion for exploring the amazing natural area in the Northwest and beyond.
I'm a first-timer. How do you get me ready for the experience?
The beauty of stand-up paddleboarding (also known as SUP) is that in the correct environment, it's extremely safe and the learning curve is quick. We provide PFD's, which are inflatable belt packs, so if you fall in you will float. We also teach you how to get back on the board in a few steps. The whole process of learning gives you a sense of accomplishment in a short period of time.
As the old adage says, "Stuff happens." What training do you and your staff have to stay ahead of the unexpected?
I have been apart of the watersports community for more than 17 years. In that time, I've taught countless numbers of individuals and couples how to kayak, canoe, and stand-up paddleboarding. I have been AC-certified, CPR and first aid certified, and advanced wilderness first aid certified. We keep a ratio of instructors to a max of four-to-one to insure safety, enhance communication, and guarantee personalized instruction.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Stand-up paddleboarding is about having fun. That is the experience that Dog Star Adventure Tours is providing to our students. It's an activity that is extremely social and appropriate for all ages.
