About Don's Pottery Shop


1. What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?

I specialize in introduction to pottery lessons on the wheel for recommended ages 9 and up. Whereas other businesses focus on bringing in large groups, I enjoy working with individuals, couples, best friends, siblings, and small groups of friends.

2. What was the inspiration to start or run this business?

I was approaching retirement and was looking for something to do. My daughter was taking ceramics at the local community college, so my wife suggested I take a class with her. One day my instructor said "Don, so you're retiring soon, what do you want to do?" Without hesitation, I said "THIS!" I spent most of my spare time assisting with workshops and learning the basics. As I got better, I found myself helping the new students with basic techniques. The college only offers classes a semester at a time, so I'm able to provide a service for the person who always wanted to try pottery, but can't commit to a whole semester.

3. What do you love most about your job?

Since I tell my customers that my goal is for them to come away from the session with a wonky little pot and a good time, I'd have to say it's seeing my customers smiling and talking about what a great time they had.

4. What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?

The best reaction I ever got was a customer who surprised her husband with a pottery lesson for his birthday. She and her had taken ceramics in college and really enjoyed it, so she booked a lesson with me. After the lesson, she asked "Did I do good?" He smiled and gave her a big kiss. Their picture is featured on my website.
