Welcome to the Groupon Christmas special. From Tuesday through Thursday this week, we're taking a break from great deals on things to do in Chicago, and offering a great deal on philanthropic giving instead. We're asking everyone to use our collective consumer power for the greater good by making a donation to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
If we raise at least $500, the Greater Chicago Food Depository will be able to feed meals to 1700 people. This Groupon fundraiser runs through the end of day Thursday, so help us make sure we meet $500 by then! And if we reach $5,000 by that date we will help GCFD reach a goal of $25,000 holiday donations that, if met, will be matched by a generous family. The suggested donation of $12, just $1 per month for 2009, will feed meals to 42 people. In other words, GCFD will use your money far more effectively than a financial investor would. For that matter, they'll use it better than even the most intelligent soldiers of the Groupon consumer army. Seriously....even when you may have used $12 to buy a great Groupon discount at a restaurant, maybe you were able to stretch your $12 into 4 or 5 good meals at best...but 42 meals? Only GCFD knows how to do that, so tip your hat to them, and then give them your $12 (or more).
While this has been a rough year for nearly everyone, it has been especially rough for charities and the people they serve. Charitable giving is down while unemployment and hunger is up. Meanwhile the cost of food has risen to an all-time high. The Food Depository serves about half a million people annually. And every week nearly 100,000 people including seniors, children and working families—rely on the Food Depository for food. During the last fiscal year, the Food Depository distributed more than 46 million pounds of food. They are working hard to help the people in need but they need your help!
