In the 1990s, a drag queen ushered customers into MAC’s flagship New York City store, where pierced and tattooed makeup artists helmed the counters and posters of RuPaul illustrated the product’s potential. Operating under the motto “All Ages, All Races, All Sexes,” the founders of M.A.C. Cosmetics never felt the need to conform to societal pressures. Frank Angelo and Frank Toskan wanted to make makeup in any shade anyone might possibly need. What they spawned was an international beauty revolution, characterized by vivid colors, bold mattes, and innovative application techniques.
M.A.C.’s influence has been seen across some of pop culture’s most iconic moments. From Madonna’s Blond Ambition tour looks to Viva Glam fundraisers featuring Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, the brand remains at the forefront of cosmetic artistry. The company is also known for its charity, raising more than $200 million for the M.A.C. AIDS Fund. In 2003, the company also helped fund a beauty school in Afghanistan, shipping $25,000 worth of cosmetics to the war-ravaged nation. The brand has managed to remain socially responsible while retaining a playful, youthful vigor over nearly 30 years. As Toskan said to the New York Times, “We’ve never taken makeup too seriously. It’s something to have fun with.”
